Closed borders and labour shortage impact insurance claims

Covid-19 has closed borders, delayed shipping and caused congestion at ports. This is having a particular impact on the motor repair and hardware industries, vehicle imports and building supplies, as goods are now taking longer to reach our shores.

This by itself is frustrating for many consumers, especially those waiting on replacement items following an insurance claim. Added to this, experts are now saying these delays are here to stay for the ‘foreseeable future’.

Yet compounding the issue further for claimants is the current shortage of available tradespeople to rectify loss or damage. One example where this is having a significant impact is the construction industry, which has been experiencing a boom for the last few years and shows no sign of slowing down.

This skills shortage was exacerbated by events such as the recent Whangarei and Napier floods, which are diverting builders temporarily to the regions, causing further delay to those waiting on claims to be rectified.

Working with an insurer’s preferred suppliers is one way that the process can be smoother at claims time, as they may have better access to and supply of stock, depending on the item.

When lodging a claim, speak to your Broker and establish up front if your claim will be impacted by these delays.  Its always good to know when your claim can be expected to be resolved, especially if items are being sourced internationally or tradespeople are required to fix any loss or damage.
