Privacy Act 2020 and the Waikato DHB

Privacy Act 2020 and the Waikato DHB

Recently we’ve posted about both the Privacy Act 2020 and cyber risks following the attack on the Waikato DHB.

While they’re discrete issues, the DHB attack is one of the first major examples of an organisation being required to fulfil its legal obligations under the new privacy breach notification regime.

The DHB must notify individuals whose details were part of the breach and take steps to prevent further distribution of the information. Organisations can be hit with $10,000 penalties if they fail to follow requirements under the legislation.

We’ll follow this one closely, as the DHB continues to investigate and looks to remediate the breach.
