Travelling in a bubble

Travelling in a bubble

While it’s fantastic that we can all now travel quarantine-free to Australia and the Cook Islands, there’s a few risks to be aware of if you or your employees are travelling on business. Read on to find out what these are:

As an employer, you’ll be responsible for their health and safety as well as any costs associated with the trip. That includes if the trip becomes longer than expected due to COVID-19.

Here’s a checklist of some of the things to be aware of:

  • It’s a good idea to check your employee is comfortable travelling in these circumstances. If possible, provide them with PPE such as face masks to last them for the length of the trip
  • You’ll have an obligation to cover any expenses caused by the trip becoming longer than expected because of COVID-19
  • You’ll also have to cover the cost of their stay in managed isolation if there is disruption to the bubble
  • You are liable for their normal pay as per their employment agreement if they become stuck overseas during a work trip and can’t work remotely, as well as other types of leave if they get COVID-19 during the business trip and run out of sick leave.
  • If your employees head to Australia or the Cook Islands on holiday, it’s their responsibility to stay safe. Remind them that they’ll have to cover the cost should they need to go into managed isolation.
