Preparing for a natural disaster

Preparing for a natural disaster

While we’re all focused on Covid, remember that natural disasters can also come with little warning. The recent floods in West Auckland raised the following question in our minds “are you prepared?”

Now’s a good time to think about a plan for what you need to get you and your family through.

In some emergencies you may need to evacuate in a hurry. Everyone should have a packed getaway kit in an easily accessible place at home and, eventually, at work. Here’s a list of essentials to tuck away and refer to, maybe when the supermarkets are a little less busy 12

  • Water for three days or more — make sure you have at least nine litres of water for every person
  • Long-lasting food that doesn’t need cooking (unless you have a camping stove or gas BBQ) and food for babies and pets
  • Toilet paper, dust masks and work gloves

It’s worth having a grab bag of essential items ready to go in the car and at work too. For a full checklist of what you need to be prepared, visit Get Ready
